August 01, 2009. Bangkok.

This was a quiet day. We walked around in the morning and afternoon, mostly in the tourist areas. Vivian and Sea went to a ladyboy show in the afternoon. I had seen it before, so I didn’t go with them. I had some shrimp balls on a stick and what I think was a mutton satay. Whatever it was, it was cooked over charcoal and was very good.

I made a half hearted attempt to find some t-shirts with pockets by looking on the two blocks opposite the two I had searched previously. But everyone was selling more or less the same things. I had some street food, then returned to the hotel about 15:00 for a shower and clean clothes.

In the evening we all went on a river cruise through the center of Bangkok. It included a dinner buffet, Thai folk dancing, and a live band. The music wasn’t very good, but the food was. The dancers were good.

We were lucky enough to get a table at the very front of the ship, right on the bow and outside. The city was attractive from the river, but if I made a picture using the flash,

nothing could be seen. If I turned off the flash for a longer exposure, the picture became blurred from the motion of the boat. Here are a few of the best. They are not very good.

The boat ride lasted about two hours. Afterward, they took us back to our hotels. We arrived at ours around 22:00. I didn’t want to go to the room. After all it was the last night of my vacation, so we went back to the same place as the last two nights and listed to my favorite Bangkok band.

Vivian danced in front of the stage again. Sea joined in once, but by the time I got my camera out the song ended and she never got up again.

About 23:30 there was a disturbance on the road outside. A small political demonstration went marching down the street. They have red shirts and yellow shirts. I don’t know what either stands for, but the yellow shirts rioted and caused some damage earlier this year. This night the demonstration was by the red shirts and was peaceful. It passed in 10 minutes or so.

Then it was back to music and

dancing and other foolishness. We stayed at the cafe until it closed at 02:00. I left a 500 baht tip for the band since I had never left anything before and really enjoyed their music.
