Living in China. July 23, 2010.

Cloudy and cool this morning. Still raining off and on.

Walked by the subway construction. I’m impressed by 2 things. First, that giant ditch has been filled in. Second, that the nearby apartment building didn’t collapse. I was sure it would sustain major damage, if not fall over completely. There was a lot of damage to the sidewalk in front of the building.

There is a tea  museum a few blocks away from my house. Surprisingly, I have never felt compelled to go inside.

Jingtian Road is the main thoroughfare in my neighborhood. One end has been closed off for several months because of the subway construction. Consequently the bus stops have been moved to unblocked roads nearby.

Many bus stops have police stationed at them. Thanks to the virtues of central planning, when one of the old stops close to my house was closed, the bus stop cop wasn’t moved. The poor guy stands at an unused bus stop all day. He paces back and forth and occasionally rides his bicycle up and down the street to charge the battery that runs his red and blue blinking lights.

I’ve gotten to know him well enough to speak when I pass. Once I asked if I could take his picture, but he said no. I took a few from a distance today.

Every so often another cop rides by on his motor bike, stops and the bus stop cop signs a log. Otherwise he doesn’t seem to have any responsibilities.

Haven’t had the air conditioner on for several days, and I think I feel better because of it. Am getting acclimated.
